Probably, your grandparents and parents have advised you not to buy any thing for your baby till your baby is actually born. This is an age old superstition. I know that your parents love you very much but experience shows that it is better to prepare for your baby in advance. The advantage is that your burden is lighter afterwards. There are no hard and fast rules for purchasing things but you should familiarize yourself with your requirements and the things available in the market.

Bedding:

I know every mother wants to get a beautiful bed with lacy silk linen but the baby doesn't care. He needs something soft but firm in the bottom for mattresses. Don't make very soft mattress. Some scientists believe that babies can easily suffocate if they lie face down on a very soft mattress.

a. Blankets: Blankets are normally made by cotton but these days blankets are normally made of acrylic or a polyester-cotton combination. These blankets are easy to wash and non allergenic. You can buy a woollen knitted shawl also, it can be conveniently used as a blanket for babies because it easily wraps around the baby and you can easily handle the baby. When you buy a blanket you should check he size of the blanket which should be large enough to tuck well under a crib mattress otherwise the baby would kick off the covering. A tight covering gives the baby comfortable and secure sleep.

b. Plastic sheets: Plastic sheets are very essential in the first few months. There are two types of plastic sheets. One is with flannelette backing on both sides. It is wonderful because it stays in place and bed sheets never slip on it. There is no need to cover it with a quilted pad. Flannel backed sheets save more laundry.
The other kind of sheets are plain waterproof sheets without quilted backing. You will need to cover them with a quilted pad. This kind of sheet absorbs moisture and  allows the air to circulate under the baby's body. This keeps the baby dry and infection free. For this kind of sheets you will need six or more pads depending upon how often the laundry is done.

c. Cotton Sheets: To avoid tension you will need at least six sheets for your baby's crib. These sheets should be a few inches larger than your crib so you can tuck them under the mattress. These sheets should be made of pure cotton. Cotton is easy to wash, quick to dry, and spreads smoothly. Most importantly, it gives a nice feeling to the baby.

d. Sleeping bags: When your baby is small and does not crawl, you would find it more practical to put the baby in a sleeping bag. The baby always stays covered. These sleeping bags are just like long nighties which cover the feet and arms perfectly. In cold weather you can easily add a blanket for extra warmth.
